Looking for book recomendations

Posted on May 12, 2009, under daily life.

I just got a gift voucher from a nice client for Amazon books and I think I need a hand picking some out. As this was work related I wanted to get books that had something to either do with business or programming.  Do you have any recommendations of books for:

  • starting up  a business
  • running your own business
  • web development
  • programming
    • PHP
    • Ruby on Rails
    • CSS
    • Database

As I’m am new to the world of working for myself I think that I should at least get a few books on this topic.

Any help would be greatly appricieated, the more recommendations the better !

Update : I’ve started to keep the list online here in case anyone else wants to view it.

Hi Paul,

A web development / design one I found really good was “Designing the Obvious: A Common Sense Approach to Web Application Design” (Robert Hoekman) – looks at the importance of simple interface design…well worth a read.

I’m next going to get the Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki – http://www.amazon.com/Art-Start-Time-Tested-Battle-Hardened-Starting/dp/1591840562/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242131452&sr=8-2 – and then probably The Essential Drucker – http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Drucker-Druckers-Management-Essentials/dp/0061345016/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242131493&sr=1-2 – Both kind of management related rather than web though.

I always loved my PHP5 and MySQL Bible as a good source for learning and reference.
