African Safari

Earlier this year I went on a safari in South Africa and I must admit it was one of the most amazing holidays I ever did. We only did 2 nights, which resulted in 4 game drives in total, and that was actually about enough for us. Typically game drives last between 3 – 4 hours , with the morning game drive kicking off at around 7:30am and the evening drive around 5pm. These are the times that the animals are most active, and sights are easier during these times. Once the midday African sun starts to shine they tend to take shelter and take an afternoon nap. By the end of the 2 days we were ready for a break from all the early starts and the bouncing around in a jeep.
Overall it was a great experience to see Elephants, Cheetah, Rhions, Water Buffalo, Zebras, various species of Bok (Blesbok, Oryx, Kudu, etc.), Wilderbeast, Giraffes, and various birds. Safaris aren’t cheap, running between €500 – €1,000 (for 2 people sharing) a night, but for a special break it definitely an experience of a lifetime. When you consider private accommodation, 4/5 meals a day, 7/8 hours driving around with a ranger, and the luxury treatment you can see how you can reach this price.
Video 1 : A view of our accommodation
Here is a quick video looking at our lodge, it was rather spacious, had 2 showers (one indoor, one outdoor) and even had a jacuzzi ! The accommodation was certainly luxurious. Narrated by Lauren.
Video 1 : Elephant encounter
While out in the park we came across two elephants grazing, in this video one comes up to the truck to itch his trunk while checking us out.

And here is another picture of my favorite animals, the Rhino. Here is an adult female with her 4 month old daughter. They were just lying across the road when we came across them.

hiya,
My ticket via London was about €640, but there were ones that were cheaper (€550), but I needed to fly at those times. The flight from London is about 11 hours. I’m sure if you flew to J’bourg it would also be possibly cheaper. Also once you are there things are also cheap (besides the safari). Actually there were a surprising number of Americans, that we heard at some of the tourist attractions.

Hey Paul – very cool! Actually, hope not to pass as spamming now, I have programmed a site for a client of ours – if you like you can write your story there and upload some images. http://www.dein-suedafrika.de – there are also some price raffles all around and you could wind another trip down to South Africa.

very cool.
So what does a plane ticket to S. Africa run you? That could significantly add to the cost too, no?
For our honeymoon, we went to Costa Rica for a week. It was a very cool, and very affordable trip (at least from the US).
